the years roll by without you, marni / seventeen have come and gone / i raised our shilo with the best intentions / but there is something i can’t tell her / i am lost without you here / i am only living out a lie
my dad bought my mom an all-in-one turntable for her birthday last month and the gf and i stole it the other night because she hasn’t used it once without us going, “PLAY WITH YOUR RECORDS PLAY WITH YOUR RECORDS” but she mostly has cock rock, disco, and some motown (which are all GR8, obvs) and i wanted to listen to 1. jazz, 2. big band, and 3. christmas music, so i was farting around on ebay looking for vinyl in those three categories with a buy-it-now prince under $10 and free shipping and on the fourth or fifth page i just finally lost my shit at the album covers
I keep trying to give Fun. a chance and they just keep letting me down in this really particular way
Like, their songs are by no stretch “bad”, it’s just, they feature really great ideas that ultimately never go anywhere and I keep waiting for a point or a zenith or something that they all build up to and every single time they just completely peter out just before things are about to get really enjoyable
So basically Fun. is like the sonic equivalent of erectile dysfunction. Dysfun. ction
WAIT I AGREE WITH THIS SO MUCH because i love “we are young” i guess but every time i listen to it i’m just WAITING for it to get really really big but it only gets a little big and it’s such a bummer
Baby, we are so excited because Swingers is on Hulu Plus which is so money and it doesn’t even know it! Click the young Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn above to watch it. (And as a bonus, Jon Favreau was a guest on Spoilers withKevin Smith this week.)
My friends and I did nearly everything these characters do in this movie. I thought we were the only people who got together for Hockey on Sega Genesis, or went to the Dresden Room to hear Marty and Elaine. When I first saw Swingers, I turned to my friend Dave and said, “Holy shit, they made a movie about us!”
swingers was the first movie that made me love movies that weren’t horror movies and movies about friendship and being from and living in l.a. and big bad voodoo daddy and MOVIES. i can’t even really explain it but this movie was weirdly important to me at twelve and i still love it a lot.
On this day in music history: May 21, 1988 - “Mercedes Boy” by Pebbles hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 1 week, also peaking at #2 on the Hot 100 on July 9th. Written by Pebbles (aka Perri McKissack), it is the second single and second consecutive R&B chart topper from the Oakland, CA born and raised singers’ self-titled debut album. Having previously worked as a background singer (as a teenager) for Bay Area based bands Con Funk Shun and Bill Summers & Summers Heat, Pebbles will get her big break when KSOL program director Marvin Robinson introduces the singer to MCA Records black music executives Jheryl Busby and Louil Silas, Jr, who immediately sign her to the label. “Mercedes Boy” will be produced by Gap Band lead vocalist Charlie Wilson.
